This Sunday, October 26, 2008 is the "Boogie For Baskets" 1 mile walk and 5k run on Metairie Road benefiting the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Francis Xavier Church. Money raised will be used to provide food baskets for the poor for Thanksgiving and Christmas and other times during the year. Racers and spectators are encouraged to bring canned goods for the food baskets. The festivities begin at 7:30am with registration. The 1 mile walk starts at 8:30am and the 5k begins at 9:00am. The starting point is The Garden Gate at 2918 Metairie Road. The course goes from The Garden Gate down Metairie Road to Oakridge and back to The Garden Gate. There will be an after race garden party featuring a 5 piece swing-band orchestra. Plenty of food and refreshments provided by area businesses will be available. There will also be awards and raffles. The cost to participate is $15.00 for adults (no t-shirt, race day); $10 for youth (age 15 and under) and $5.00 for spectator admission to the party. If you bring canned goods, the spectator fee is waived.
We will be there. Join us to help support this good cause and have some fun!
The time has come to get your flu shot. This year the vaccine promises to be a better formula. It is relatively inexpensive and only takes a few minutes. Believe me, it is much better than actually getting the flu! Most area physicians and pharmacies offer the vaccine on specific days for somewhere between $20 and $35. Last year Majoria Drugs was also offering the Pneumonia vaccine.
It is important for everyone to get the flu vaccine, but especially young children and senior citizens. Protect yourself and those around you. Don't wait too long. We are getting our flu shots today!
I could feel October in the air today. What a beautiful day! I wanted to go out and buy a pumpkin. There are so many great things about October. First, hurricane season is almost over. Then, there is football - the Saints, LSU, Tulane and all of the local prep teams. The Hornets are also back! And don't forget about the Major League Baseball playoffs and the World Series. Lots of local schools have Book Fairs or big fairs. There is so much to do! Get out there and enjoy all our City has to offer! Happy October!
